After a wrenching night full of hope and sorrow, Gov. Mary Fallin was functioning on three hours’ sleep Tuesday when she visited First Baptist Church in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore. The church—one of those fortunate buildings that wasn’t blown to smithereens by Monday’s monster tornado—had been turned into a makeshift Red Cross facility offering food and shelter to victims and helping relatives separated in the lethal storm to reunite.

“When I was in the church,” the governor recounted in an interview with The Daily Beast, “I heard several ladies wailing really loud, because they’d just been told that they’d lost a loved one. It was a very emotional, hard experience to listen to utter grief—the dimensions of the tragedy and the voices of those ladies. One of them had just found out she had lost her husband. I don’t know about the other ones. But I never heard people scream and cry that loud.”

It was a challenge, but the 58-year-old Fallin—a supremely successful politician, but also a wife and mother—managed to keep her composure. The day before, the goal of simply not losing it was equally difficult as she picked her away across a debris field at midnight and watched dozens of first responders dig for trapped children in a pulverized pile that had once been Plaza Towers Elementary School.

LANSING, MI — Michigan Republican Gov. Rick Snyder is running dead even with potential Democratic challenger Mark Schauer, according to the results of a new statewide poll.

The EPIC-MRA poll, conducted May 11-15, asked 600 likely voters who they would pick in a 2014 matchup pitting the governor against the former Congressman. Thirty-nine percent of respondents said they would back Snyder, while another 39 percent said they’d pick Schauer.

Snyder has not confirmed his own re-election plans, but he has discussed unfinished business and is widely expected to run. Schauer recently told MLive he is in the final stages of his decision making process and is “looking very seriously” at a gubernatorial bid.

“Anytime an incumbent is below 50 percent, they are at least to some degree vulnerable, and Snyder isn’t even at 40 percent,” said pollster Bernie Porn, who attributed those numbers to the state’s new right-to-work law and the governor’s proposal to increase road funding by raising gasoline taxes and registration fees.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will use a Saturday speech to Virginia Republicans to suggest the IRS officials who targeted conservative political organizations for scrutiny be sent to prison.

“You cannot take the freedom of law-abiding Americans, whether you disagree with them or not, and keep your own freedom,” Jindal, a Republican, will tell delegates at the Virginia GOP convention, according to remarks shared with POLITICO. “When you do that, you go to jail.”

Channeling the growing fury on the right over the IRS scandal, Jindal will call the matter “simply un-American.”

Since last week’s disclosure that the tax agency singled out conservative-sounding organizations for extra scrutiny, Republicans have begun jockeying to express maximum outrage toward President Barack Obama’s administration. House Speaker John Boehner said, “My question is who’s going to jail over this scandal.”

Madison – Wisconsin’s employers would get flexibility to lower the hours of a group of workers instead of laying off just a few of them, under a bill signed Friday by Gov. Scott Walker.

The legislation also would bring in a modest amount of federal tax dollars both to implement the bill and to pay workers’ unemployment benefits for lost hours.

“Wisconsin now joins 24 other states with work-share programs,” Walker said in a statement. “Instead of getting a pink slip during an economic downturn, workers now have an opportunity to stay on the job and receive unemployment benefits for the hours they lose.”

The Senate last month approved the measure 18-15, with all Democrats opposed. The bill passed the Assembly on a bipartisan vote of 74-22.

Democrats said they supported the idea but thought the bill should include added protection for labor agreements that was supported by unions and business groups on a state advisory council.

Bob McDonnell, who will soon be contributing his own hops to the growing industry. McDonnell planted a total of about 15 hops vines on the grounds of the governor’s Richmond mansion Monday and expects a harvest from the 2-year-old cascade vines this August.

“Virginia was once a hotbed of hops production,” Todd Haymore, Virginia’s secretary of agriculture and forestry, told Yeas & Nays, citing Thomas Jefferson and George Washington as past growers. “We’re coming back around to our history.”

The new vines join the wine grapes that McDonnell planted on the mansion’s grounds two years ago, which produced wine that has been aging in barrels since late 2012. This summer will see the first release of wine made partially from mansion grapes. Haymore is also optimistic for a “mansion beer.”
